EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), simple

An esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD, is a procedure that allows a doctor to examine the lining of the upper digestive tract—including the esophagus, stomach, and the beginning of the small intestine (duodenum). A thin, flexible tube with a camera (called an endoscope) is gently inserted through the mouth and guided down the throat. This test helps identify issues like ulcers, inflammation, bleeding, or tumors, and it may be used to take tissue samples (biopsies) or perform minor treatments. Patients are usually sedated for comfort during the procedure. It typically takes less than 30 minutes and is done on an outpatient basis. After the procedure, patients rest until the sedation wears off and can usually go home the same day.
