Non-laparoscopic hernia repair uses a single larger incision to access and repair the weak spot in the abdominal wall where tissue or an organ has pushed through. This open approach may be used when the hernia is complex, very large, or when a laparoscopic approach is not appropriate. Mesh is often placed to reinforce the repair and reduce the chance of recurrence. Recovery from open repair typically takes longer than after laparoscopic surgery, and your surgeon will advise on activity limits and follow-up care.
