A complex EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a procedure in which a thin, flexible camera is passed through the mouth to examine the upper digestive tract and perform a more involved intervention during the same visit, such as treating bleeding, removing a foreign object, dilating a narrowing, or addressing other abnormalities. Sedation is given to keep you comfortable, and the procedure takes longer than a simple EGD due to the additional treatment involved. Most patients go home the same day. Your doctor will discuss what was found and any next steps needed.
